About Hand Therapy
Hand Therapy is rehabilitation for patients with conditions affecting the hand, wrist and elbow. The nature of hand injury requires a provider with a high degree of specialization that requires extensive continuing education and often, advanced certification.
Hand therapy can be provided by an Occupational Therapist or Physical Therapist who has been specially trained to care for individuals who have been affected by injury, accident, trauma or surgery to the hand or upper extremity.
Post-operative care typically includes:
- Management of hypertrophic or hypersensitive scarring
- Initiation of controlled post-operative joint movement
- Reduction of post-operative swelling
- Management of post-operative wounds
- Splint fabrication to protect operative procedures
- Initiation of Home exercise programs
Conservative and preventative care for:
- Carpal tunnel syndrome
- Tennis elbow
- Acute and chronic pain syndromes arthritis
