Read Dr. Snyder's article on Pain Management
To put it simply, medicine is in his blood. So says Dr. Mark Snyder, who comes from a whole family of doctors. As a youngster, he could envision what his chosen profession would be. "After watching my uncles and grandfather, I could think of no better way to have a challenging and exciting career," he said.
The Minneapolis native received his undergraduate degree from Stanford University in California and later committed to the University of Cincinnati, College of Medicine to complete his medical training. After completing an orthopaedic residency in Cincinnati he was awarded a prestigious fellowship in arthritis surgery and research at Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. "I became interested in arthritis surgery during medical school because I saw what a dramatic improvement it made in people's lives," said Dr. Snyder, who is now internationally known in the field.
Dr. Snyder practices primarily out of the Blue Ash and Union Centre offices. Good Samaritan is his primary hospital for total joint replacement surgery. He and his wife, Carol, have three children and live in Mason.
Dr. Snyder is the Director of the Orthopaedic Center of Excellence at Good Samaritan Hospital. In addition to leading a high volume, responsive arthritis surgery practice, he is a frequent guest professor throughout the world. He often teaches on missions to needy areas like Mexico and the Ukraine. He is a consultant to the Smith & Nephew Company – a prominent world-leader in total joint replacement technologies.
Dr. Snyder maintains that responsible clinical research is the proven way to enhance patient outcomes and offer the region the very best in orthopaedic surgical advances. During the year, his adult reconstruction research team supports multiple new drug and surgical studies designed to improve patient comfort and safety. Some of this work has received national recognition and research awards.
Patient Education
Dr. Snyder has authored internationally respected and utilized patient education materials like Total Knee Replacement and Total Hip Replacement handouts. These have been made available on his web site. These patient teaching tools are freely available to any orthopaedic surgeon throughout the world to enhance their own patients’ understanding of and successful participation in total joint replacement surgery.
Total Joint Replacement
of late 2009, Dr. Snyder completed more than 8,000 primary and revision total knee and hip replacement surgeries. In the Tri-State area, he is the volume leader in knee replacement operations over the last ten years. He helped develop new implant systems and surgical techniques like “Minimally Invasive Surgery” to ease recovery from joint replacement and improve the quality of the outcome. He teaches these methods throughout the country. A hallmark of his clinical priorities is the regular use of “multimodal pain management methods” which greatly lessen the usually intense pain associated with total joint replacement.
For the past decade Dr. Snyder has been a national leader in the development and regular use of a total joint registry and clinical outcomes assessment system. It is through these tools that better than national standards clinical results and joint implant longevity have been achieved. Registry data enables Dr. Snyder to detect and then help correct joint implant and surgical technique problems long before even a small number of patients would otherwise experience unrecognized or premature clinical failure. This total joint registry is privacy protected and HIPPA compliant.
Advanced Techniques and Technologies
Dr. Snyder both helps develop and employs the most advanced, and proven surgical techniques and implant technologies. He has the region’s leading experience with the latest implant technologies like super strong polyethylene and scratch/wear --resistant metal surfaces in both total knee and hip replacement. It is hoped that these tremendous technological improvements will increase the durability of joint replacement implants well into a second, if not a third decade after surgery. While “only time will tell,” Dr. Snyder believes that careful study and continuous quality improvement are essential to improving the track record of total joint replacement. His insistence that patients commit to lifetime follow-up documented in his total joint registry will ensure that both success and potential failure trends will be analyzed for the betterment of patients both here and throughout the world.
