Fellowship ProgramWellington Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine, The University of Cincinnati School of Medicine and Mercy Hospital Anderson have designed an ACGME, AOSSM, AANA accredited one-year fellowship program which provides in-depth experience in the operative and non-operative management of joint problems across the spectrum. Through participation in clinics, surgical exposure, and work with high school, college, amateur, and professional sports teams, our fellows develop sound principles and sufficient experience to manage sports medicine disorders upon completion of the fellowship. The fellowship is broken down into 60% operative, 30% clinical, and 10% research experience. Each fellow will spend time with Dr. Robert Heidt, Jr. Dr. Angelo Colosimo, Dr. Paul Favorito, Dr. Denver Stanfield, and Dr. Ronald Hess. Extra time can be spent with any of the attendings in the Wellington or University practices depending on the fellows' particular needs and interests. Surgical cases for fellows are abundant because of the high number of cases generated by a group as large as Wellington in combination with University. On average, fellows in this program have been involved in more than 500 cases per year. Each fellow will likely be involved in more than 150 ACL reconstructions and more than 300 additional arthroscopic procedures. Approximately 50% of surgery that fellows participate in involves the knee, 40% the shoulder, and 10% the elbow, wrist, hip, foot, and ankle. Fellows are assigned to three rotations on a monthly basis. Because of this schedule, fellows are able to follow patients pre-operatively, in surgery, and through long-term post-operative care. The fellows participate in sports injury clinics both on amateur, college, and professional levels which allows them to be intimately involved in the preoperative planning for many of the surgical cases. Research opportunities in the various aspects of orthopaedic surgery are available through the fellowship, including basic laboratory research in biomechanics, biomaterials and applied fields, and the clinical applications of advanced procedures. Wellington Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine provides a research director to oversee and assist in all research endeavors. Fellows are expected to complete and have ready for submission at least one manuscript during their fellowship year. At the completion of this fellowship, our fellows are competent in both open and arthroscopic management of shoulder and knee problems. They are also well trained in diagnostic and non-operative care of sports related injuries. Their exposure to organized sports from the high school to professional level make them excellent candidates to become team physicians at any level of sport. The fellowship currently accepts three fellows per year for training. Additional information about our fellowship can be found at http://www.orthosurg.net/cincinnati-sports-fellowship/. | ||||
