James R. Leonard, MD
An early aptitude for all things mechanical helped Dr. Jim Leonard discern
his calling in medicine. "My dad was an obstetrician,
and as I got older, I realized how much his patients relied on him. That
attracted me to medicine. As I considered possible specialties, I realized
that I could always fix anything. So orthopaedics seemed like a logical
choice," he explains.
Dr. Leonard has been caring for patients with bone, muscle and joint problems
since 1986 in Greater Cincinnati and, for one year, in Texas. "I’ve
always enjoyed treating patients who have a variety of orthopaedic problems,
with an emphasis on knee and shoulder issues," he says. "And
with five children of my own, I love taking care of kids."
His medical career took an interesting turn when he herniated a disc in
his neck. "I had numbness in my hand and weakness
in my biceps and grip. A fellow physician treated me with acupuncture,
and the symptoms subsided for five or six weeks. After a second acupuncture
treatment, the symptoms were gone," Dr. Leonard says. Intrigued
by the effectiveness of this ancient Chinese medical practice, he trained
to become an acupuncturist himself and has practiced orthopaedic medicine
and acupuncture ever since. Dr. Leonard also teaches medical acupuncture
all over the country as a faculty member of the Helms Medical Institute.
A native Cincinnatian, Dr. Leonard graduated from St. Xavier High School,
Xavier University and the University Of Cincinnati College Of Medicine.
He completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at the University of Cincinnati
Medical Center. When he’s not in the office or the operating room,
he enjoys spending time with his family, riding motorcycles and woodworking
- yet another mechanical pursuit.
His association with Wellington reunites Dr. Leonard with a number of
respected physicians who helped to train him as an orthopaedic surgeon.
"I’ve always considered Wellington to
be one of the more prestigious groups in the city, he says. "I’m
happy to be continuing my career here."
