Robert S. Heidt, Sr., MD Emeritus
Robert Heidt Sr., MD, one of the founding members of Wellington Orthopaedic & Sports Medicine, retired from active medical practice in 2000 to close that chapter of a medical career that began in 1956. Dr. Heidt received his bachelor's degree from the University of Cincinnati. At only 18, he was the university's youngest graduate at the time. He received his medical degree from the University of Louisville. After serving an internship and residencies at The Christ Hospital in Cincinnati, he served in the United States Air Force in France as chief of surgery and deputy commanding officer. Following military service, Dr. Heidt served orthopaedic residencies and fellowships at several prestigious Boston hospitals, and despite an offer to teach at Boston University, returned home in 1956 to Cincinnati to enter private practice. Starting as a solo practitioner, Dr. Heidt grew the practice into one of the nation's largest comprehensive orthopaedic groups. The group was instrumental in helping to shape the future of orthopaedic medicine, providing leadership in joint replacement techniques and biomaterials research for joints. They have also introduced new arthroscopic techniques and advanced clinical knowledge through participation in clinical trials of new medications. Dr. Heidt was active in local, state and national medical associations, including having served as president of the Academy of Medicine of Cincinnati and the State Medical Board of Ohio. Reflecting on his career, Dr. Heidt says, "My greatest satisfaction is taking care of people. I very much enjoyed orthopaedics; I don't think I would have been as happy doing anything else. It's just been fun." |
