Spencer L. Butterfield, MD
Childhood summers spent building boats and furniture with his grandfather in Maine turned out to be an important part of Dr. Spencer Butterfield's pre-med education. "He used to tell me, 'All of the things I'm teaching you will make you have good hands.' And he was right," Dr. Butterfield recalls. "I'm very good at fracture work and the spatial organization it requires because of the hand-eye skills I developed during those summers with my grandfather."
Dr. Butterfield began his medical career as a member of his father's orthopaedic practice in Connecticut. However, fellowship training in Europe had heightened his interest in trauma care, and he soon joined a busy trauma team at a regional medical center in Pittsburgh where he served for more than a decade.
"We cared for a tremendous number of patients with fractures, including those that are very difficult to heal," Dr. Butterfield says. "Treatment for these patients requires experienced judgment to understand why the fractures don't heal and which operative intervention will help."
When treatment options are limited, "I'll give my patients a very strong recommendation," Dr. Butterfield says. But when a number of options exist, he's an enthusiastic advocate of patient-selected care. "I encourage my patients to participate in the decision. If the don't want an operation, for example, we may try a course of physical therapy to see if they improve."
While family-including three grandchildren-made Cincinnati an attractive practice location, Dr. Butterfield was drawn to Wellington as an assertive, up-to-date group that welcomed his skills in general orthopaedics. He will see patients at Wellington's Westside and Deaconess offices.
