Pilates History
After 70 years, the Pilates Method has taken on a life of its own, providing positive movement experiences for scores of individuals in all walks of life. The original principles of Pilates are being successfully applied to orthopedic rehabilitation, dance medicine, sports medicine, senior care and gait analysis, to name just a few. The original exercises have been preserved and termed Classical Pilates, while the expansion of the basic exercises matching the needs of today's clientele has been termed Contemporary or Pilates-Evolved. Regardless of terminology, Pilates exercises can be performed on a mat using the body and gravity as resistance, on a series of spring-resisted equipment, and using small proprioceptive devices.
