James Plettner, MD, Retired, is a board-certified hand surgeon who specialized in hand and wrist surgery at Wellington Orthopaedic & Sports Medicine, serving the greater Cincinnati area. Known to most of his patients as Dr. Jim Plettner, he saw patients at the Wellington Cincinnati offices in Anderson and Blue Ash.
At the age of 18, Dr. Plettner suffered a complex injury while working on a barge in New Orleans, inspiring him to become a surgeon and help restore people to normal function who previously would have been permanently disabled. He started his education at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, before completing medical school at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. Initially trained in general and vascular surgery, he also worked at the National Cancer Institute.
Later, while researching at the Shriners Burns Institute in Cincinnati, Dr. Plettner’s interest turned to surgery of the hand, and he began studying under a pioneering hand surgery group with Dr. Joseph Kutz and Dr. Harold Kleinert. He stayed in Cincinnati for his residency in general surgery and then completed his fellowship in hand and microsurgery at the University of Louisville in Kentucky.
Using microsurgical techniques, Dr. Plettner performed vascular and nerve surgery for small vessel repair, as well as treating fractures and sprains of the hand and wrist. He treated patients of all ages, from children with congenital hand defects through adults with sports injuries to seniors with rheumatoid arthritis.
In addition, he is certified by the American Board of Surgery which certifies general, vascular, and thoracic surgeons as well as hand surgeons. Dr. Plettner is also a member of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand, American College of Surgeons, Association for Academic Surgery, and Association of Surgical Education.
Dr. Plettner is married and has two children.
