Arthritis

The painful joint inflammation known as arthritis is often more pronounced in weight-bearing joints such as the knee, hip or spine. Sufferers typically notice joint pain, swelling and/or diminished movement. Wrists, elbows or shoulders are also common attack points for arthritis, but in some cases the actual source of the discomfort can be deceiving, as with an arthritic hip that manifests itself as chronic knee pain.

Common over-the-counter treatments include aspirin, naproxen or ibuprofen for inflammation, and acetaminophen for pain.

There are, however, over 100 varieties of arthritis, and sufferers need to be alert to other systemic symptoms such as unexplained weight loss, fever, and general aches and pains. If symptoms restrict activity, and over-the-counter medications bring no relief, seek medical guidance.

Wellington Orthopaedics & Sportsmedicine specializes in the treatment of arthritis, for those young and old.
