Shoulder Replacement Q & A

What is a Shoulder Replacement?

Shoulder replacement is a type of joint replacement surgery aimed at restoring shoulder function. It’s not as common as hip or knee replacement surgery, but it’s estimated that more than 50,000 people in the United States undergo a shoulder replacement each year.

You may benefit from shoulder replacement surgery if more conservative treatments have failed to help you regain function in your shoulder or if your symptoms are worsening.

When Would I Need a Shoulder Replacement?

You may benefit from a shoulder replacement if you have a health condition that affects the function of your shoulder. Common conditions that may require shoulder replacement include:

  • Osteoarthritis
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Rotator cuff arthropathy
  • Post-traumatic arthritis
  • Severe fractures

You may also need a shoulder replacement if you have a condition called avascular necrosis, which develops when your bone tissue is no longer getting the blood supply it needs to survive.

What are My Shoulder Replacement Options?

Your shoulder is a very complex joint and there’s no one single surgery that works for all shoulder issues. Your experienced specialist at Wellington Orthopaedic & Sports Medicine works closely with you to determine the best surgical option for you based on your specific health needs.

Surgical shoulder replacement options may include:

  • Total Shoulder Replacement: During a total shoulder replacement, your damaged joint is replaced with a highly polished metal ball that’s attached to a stem and inserted into a plastic socket.
  • Stemmed Hemiarthroplasty: During a stemmed hemiarthroplasty, only the ball of your shoulder joint is replaced.
  • Resurfacing Hemiarthroplasty: In a resurfacing hemiarthroplasty, only the socket portion of your shoulder joint is replaced.
  • Reverse Total Shoulder Replacement: In a reverse total shoulder replacement, your replacement parts are switched. Meaning your ball replacement joint is placed where your socket would be, and the socket where your ball would be. Your specialist may recommend this type of procedure if you have severe rotator cuff tearing and would continue to experience pain even after a traditional total shoulder replacement.

Recovery from any of the shoulder replacement surgeries takes time and requires therapy. However, you should enjoy less pain and more mobility after you’ve healed.
