Plantar Fascitis
The Plantar Fascia is the fibrous tissue on the bottom of the foot, connecting the heel and toe bones. The inflammation of this tissue--known as Plantar Fascitis--is the most common cause of heel pain. The pain develops gradually, but is frequently worse in the morning before foot tissues have been limbered up. Pain can redevelop with extended standing or sitting. Treatment includes over-the-counter anti-inflammatories such as Ibuprofen. Sufferers are encouraged to wear shoes with cushioned soles or heels, avoid walking on concrete, and practice stretching exercises for achilles tendons. If symptoms have not improved in 3-4 weeks, seek medical guidance. Wellington Orthopaedic & Sportsmedicine has specialists trained in this area.
