Michael C. Welch, M.D.

Dr. Michael Welch got an early introduction to the field of medicine. First of all, his dad was a "black bag country doctor," who worked seven days a week, covering a 50-mile radius in rural Harrison, Ohio. "The only time I get to see Dad was when I went on rounds with him," said the board-certified surgeon. "It was then that I got interested in medicine."

Then came the dare at age 13 from his best friend to swing by rope over a gully. Let's just say he didn't make it, and ended up with a open tibia fracture--with bone popping through the skin. Not to worry, his dad was there to set the fracture.

Upon graduating from Upper Arlington High School, Dr. Welch received his bachelor's degree from Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio. He completed his medical degree and residency at The Ohio State University and internship at Riverside Methodist Hospital, both in Columbus.

While a resident at Ohio State, he got the opportunity to study complex fracture and reconstructive surgery in Switzerland. His understanding of basic bone healing and implant materials led to his love of total hip and knee replacement surgery, which is his area of expertise. Dr. Welch has extensive experience in revision of previously performed total hip and knee surgeries.

His philosophy in caring for his patients is that each patient is the most important patient he cares for. He believes that total joint surgery brings vast increased quality of life to patients, which he finds exciting and personally rewarding.

Dr. Welch is married, and has a son and a daughter.
