Michael
Lawhon, M.D.
Dr. Michael Lawhon has
received many distinctive honors, but one of his most recent is being nominated this
year into the University of Louisville Athletic Hall of Fame. The induction ceremonies
will be held in February.
A 1972 U of L graduate, Dr. Lawhon helped lead the Cardinal basketball team to a
Final Four appearance that same year. The Hall of Fame recognition honors Dr. Lawhons
athletic excellence, as well as his professional and community service accomplishments--which
are many.
He currently serves as the Team Physician and Sportsmedicine/Orthopaedic Medical
Director of the Great American ATP Tennis Championship. In addition, he is one of
the sportsmedicine physicians for the U.S. Davis Cup, and is the team physician for
several area colleges and high schools.
Dr. Lawhons interest in sportsmedicine stems from his own personal athletic achievements.
Besides his basketball fame, he was ranked No. 1 regionally in doubles tennis from
1991-1995. I know from personal experience that tennis is a tough sport to play
on a daily basis, said Dr. Lawhon, who lives in Anderson Township with his wife
and children.
In addition to being board certified in orthopaedic surgery, Dr. Lawhon has received
additional pediatric training and treats pre-adolescent athletes. Due to his interest
and concern for children, Dr. Lawhon serves on the Board of Directors of the National
Down Syndrome Congress and has authored articles and educational material on Down
Syndrome. He also consults with and serves on the Boards of several local charities
and sports programs.
