Fractures

A fracture, or broken bone, occurs most commonly with body limbs such as arms, legs, hands and feet, but fractures can also occur (and are more dangerous) in the skull or spinal column. Only trained professionals should move or diagnose someone with a potential head or back injury.

Limb fractures may cause pain, swelling, discoloration, loss of movement or a grinding sensation in the affected area. Ice and elevation can be used to alleviate swelling until an X-ray can be taken.

The broken bones are mended by realigning them via either surgery or traction and keeping them stable, as in a plaster cast or splint, until the bones can knit.
