Take note of our Q & A for patients of Eastern Orthopaedics. John P. Zisko, MD
As an orthopaedic physician specializing in sports medicine, Dr. Zisko is fulfilling a childhood dream. "Since my Little League days I've wanted to be a sports physician." During medical school he dislocated his kneecap. The injury was frustrating. But the subsequent care he received, combined with the time he spent working with a sports medicine physician, provided all the confirmation he needed. This was the field for him. While completing a fellowship in Primary Care Sports Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic, Dr. Zisko became fully entrenched in every aspect of sports medicine. The fellowship put him in the role of assistant physician for the Cleveland Cavaliers, Cleveland State University sports teams, and the Cleveland Ballet. Today, Dr. Zisko doesn't simply use his expertise to treat his patients. He also uses his expertise to educate his patients about how to avoid re-injury. "I want athletes to know that I've got their best interests in mind. I know how anxious they are to return to their sport. We spend a lot of time discussing when it's OK to play again. Athletes need to know that their decisions will impact the healing process." Dr. Zisko firmly believes that coaches, trainers, physical therapists, athletes and their parents all play an important role in getting an injured athlete back to the playing field. "It's a multi-disciplinary approach to taking care of athletes," he explains. He puts this philosophy to work as team physician at Bethel-Tate and Batavia high schools. In addition to athletes, Dr. Zisko routinely sees patients suffering from osteoarthritis and other musculoskeletal injuries. As a Wellington physician, Dr. Zisko is pleased to be able to work with patients he first met when in private practice in Harrison on Cincinnati's west side. He and his wife have three children.
